Dear Parent/Guardian,

Berrien Elementary School, students participating in the Title I, Part A program, and their families, agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement as well as describes how school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the state's high standards.

To understand how working together can benefit your child, it is first important to understand our district's and school's goals for student academic achievement.

Berrien County School System Goals:

1.     Berrien County School System will improve academic achievement of all students in order to meet national standards and increase graduation rate and post-secondary enrollment.

2.     Berrien County will develop a strong partnership with parents, the community, and other governmental agencies.

3.     Berrien County School System will provide a safe environment for students and personnel during the school day.

4.     Berrien County School System will recruit, develop, motivate, retain, and recognize high performing faculty and other personnel.

5.     Berrien County School System will provide and maintain facilities and technology that are conducive to student achievement.

                                                       Berrien Elementary School Goals:

1.     By 2017, BES will strive to increase student growth in all subject areas and will strive to meet or exceed the state's benchmarks on the EOG state assessments. BES will provide a safe and drug free school, increase communication strategies with all stakeholders and increase student achievement through character recognition, technology, and career clusters.

                                                           School Responsibilities:

As a school, we will:

1.     Provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding such topics as the state's academic content and achievement standards, state and local academic assessments, the requirements of Title I, how to monitor their student's academic progress and how to work with school staff to improve the achievement of the student.

3.     Ensure that all information related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities is sent to parents in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand.

4.     Provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request.

7.     Hold parent-teacher conferences annually during which the Parent-Student-Teacher Compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child's achievement.

8.     Be readily accessible to parents and provide opportunities for parents to meet with them on a regular basis to discuss their student's progress and to participate as appropriate in the decisions relating to their student's education.

                                                            Parent Responsibilities:

As a parent, I will:

1.     Support my student's learning at home by:

a.     Monitoring attendance, tardiness, and early checkouts

b.     Monitoring completion of homework

c.     Volunteering in the classroom

d.     Actively communicate with my child's teacher by removing and reading materials in the weekly communication folder and the newsletter

e.     Be aware of and follow the rules and regulations of the school and school district

f.     Monitor child's progress and grades and notify teacher when concerned

g.     Communicating any problems with the teacher first before contacting administration

h.     Ensure my child is prepared for learning by making sure he/she receives adequate sleep and proper nutrition

i.     Update emergency information, addresses, and phone numbers as changes occur

j.     Support, reinforce, and model school rules

k.     Discuss bullying and promoting a safe school

                                                           Student Responsibilities:

As a student, I will:

1.     Ask for help from my teacher and family when having trouble with my work

2.     Read on my own and with my family each day

3.     Talk to my family about what I am learning in school

4.     Write down assignments, do my homework and turn it in on time

5.     Study for my tests

6.     Practice my addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts daily

7.     Maintain good manners and play fairly with others (no bullying)

8.     Follow classroom and school rules

9.     Bring supplies and completed homework back to school everyday

10.     Have high expectations for myself and approach all tasks with a positive attitude

11.     Listen and do my best

12.     Treat the staff, parents, others students, and visitors with respect

13.     Talk to a trusted adult if I am aware of bullying or unsafe behavior

14.     Share my weekly folder and agenda with my parents weekly and every night

Please review this School-Parent compact with your child.  This School-Parent Compact will be discussed with you throughout the year at different school-family events as we work together to help your child succeed in school.
