MEDIA CENTER PHILOSOPHY

Our goal is to instill in students a love of reading that will last a lifetime.  We want to provide students with the skills and materials necessary to locate and utilize information for a variety of academic and recreational pursuits.

Checkout Policy

Students may visit the media center once per school day to checkout books. Students may checkout 2 books and may keep them up to 2 weeks.  Books may be renewed multiple times, as long as the books are not on hold by other patrons.  If books are overdue, students may not checkout more books until they are renewed or returned. If books are lost or damaged by students, payment must be made before more books can be checked out.

Lexile Levels

Each student now has a Lexile level based on their individual reading ability.  Students will check out one book on their Lexile and one book for pleasure each time they visit the media center. The student goal each 9 weeks - read 10 books on or above their Lexile level and pass an AR test with 80% accuracy. Lexile levels will be increased throughout the school year based on student progress.  Book goals will increase throughout the school year, also. Students who meet their goal will be featured on the BES Morning Announcements in our "Look Whoooo's Reading segment and will participate in a school-wide reading incentive reward at the end of each 9 week period.

BOOK FAIRS

Book fairs are held twice during the school year, schedule permitting. The first book fair will take place in the fall and time permitting the other in the spring of the year.
